I have been watching the news with increasing alarm over the whole situation that is arising in London and now Birmingham.
The BBC interviews quote how this is a rehash of the racially-motivated riots in the 1980s. Rubbish. There is nothing in this to do with race, religion, colour or creed and I'm glad to see that David Lammy MP, the local Labour MP who I rarely agree with, acknowledges that.
All of this is thuggery, pure and simple.
Whilst, in the aftermath of all of this, I am sure that the media commentariat like Polly Toynbee and Co will all go on about nasty Tories, slash and burn, cuts, cuts, cuts and all that rubbish, there is no excuse for it. It has nothing to do with cuts.
It is a lack of aspiration, role models and motivation.
What is really going to annoy many people tonight and over the next few days is that it is our taxes that will be paying up for the clean-up operation. It is our taxes that I am willing to bet keep a fair proportion of those culprits in their homes and on benefits. They should all hang their heads in shame about what they are doing. Terrorising people on their streets and putting lives in danger is never excusable.
Theresa May, the Home Secretary, is absolutely right - the culprits should be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. No excuses. Wrong is wrong.
As for the talk about where was Cameron? To be honest, he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. If he had returned it would have been claimed that David Cameron had no confidence in his ministers to deal with the situation and he was being too interventionist like Blair. But now he is returning to the country now the situation is escalating and he is dealing with the issue at hand.
